We argue that these studies, which have an interdisciplinary character, contribute to different basic areas of Linguistics, such as Phonetics, Phonology, Psycholinguistics and Applied Linguistics to Foreign Language Teaching. As we discuss their contributions, we present some recent studies on perceptual training and explicit instruction, which we have carried out at <em>Laboratório de Bilinguismo e Cognição</em> (LABICO - UFRGS). These studies will be organized in two groups, according to their main goals: (i) studies focusing on accuracy/degree of L2 accent and (ii) studies focusing on L2 intelligibility and comprehensibility.
