This article analyzes a polemic that follows the development of the Coronavirus pandemic in the different Brazilian media: the struggle between saving lives and saving the economy. To develop this analysis, some textual excerpts from the discourses involving the polemic in question are presented, which circulated in the digital media, more specifically on nationally relevant vehicle websites. Based on the French Discourse Analysis, an attempt was made to present perspectives that contribute to the identification of the discursive mechanisms that characterize the polemic. In the process of analyzing such discourses, aspects that characterize the polemic were discussed, based on authors who have already studied this phenomenon, as well as some concepts that help to understand its discursive functioning were also mobilized. Thus, it was possible to identify discursive memories, disputed positions and production conditions, aspects intertwined with the present historical and sociocultural context and whiches help to deconstruct a supposed language transparency.
