About the Journal

Mission and scope

Cadernos de Linguística (Cad_Lin) is a Platinum Open Access journal sponsored by the Brazilian Linguistics Association - Abralin. It publishes rigorously peer-reviewed scholarly research that makes a significant contribution to our understanding of human language. Cad_Lin follows the “publish, review, curate” framework and operates under a continuous publication model: manuscripts must be previously deposited in a preprint repository before submission and, if accepted, will be posted online as soon as the production process is completed. The journal publishes articles accepted and presented at events organized by Abralin, theme issues and registered reports. Cad_Lin supports the concept of open science which seeks to open up the entire research and publication process even further, including open data, open protocols, open code and transparent peer review. Besides, it seeks to encourage responsible behaviors in research, and to promote a research culture that supports collaboration, diversity, inclusion, and openness. Cad_Lin actively invests in research culture in a variety of ways.

Frequency

The journal operates under a continuous publication model. We publish one volume per year. A volume may be subdivided into numbers that are published continuously.

Open Science

The Open Science movement proposes guidelines for collaborative, shared, and public scientific practice. In line with the Open Science guidelines, Cad_Lin adopts an open access policy, requiring the publication of preprints in a preprint server that supports public commenting, and the sharing of analysis data sets, instruments, statistical analysis scripts, scripts, and additional materials, in open repositories. In addition, the evaluation process of Cadernos de Linguística is open and transparent. Cadernos de Linguística  is featured as one of the highest scoring TOP Factor journalsTOP Factor is a metric that reports the steps that a journal is taking to implement open science practices, practices that are based on the core principles of the scientific community. It is an alternative way to assess journal qualities, and is an improvement over traditional metrics that measure mean citation rates. At Cad_Lin we support and collaborate with organisations and initiatives that promote Open Science practices and policies.

Diversity Statement

Cad_Lin is dedicated to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the field of linguistics. We believe that diversity strengthens scholarship, and we are committed to publishing research from scholars with various institutional affiliations, nationalities, and career stages. We particularly welcome submissions from scholars who have been historically underrepresented in academia due to their race, ethnicity, gender identity, disability, or other protected characteristics. We encourage authors to engage with and cite sources that have been historically excluded from academia and to incorporate the work of scholars based in the countries about which they are writing. We are committed to eliminating bias in our editorial and review processes and continually strive to identify and implement best practices for scientific publishing. We recognize that biases can exist at all stages of the publication process and are actively working to increase the diversity of our editorial board and reviewers to ensure a fair and equitable review process. Cad_Lin is dedicated to promoting a welcoming and inclusive research culture that supports collaboration, diversity, and openness. We are committed to ensuring that all members of our community feel valued, respected, and included.

Ethics and Good Practices

Cad_Lin Journal is committed to maintaining high ethical standards and good publication practices, and its editorial conduct is guided by the international principles of the Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors. Therefore, editors, reviewers, and authors follow guidelines for their work in the journal before, during, and after the publication process of each issue.

In general terms, the editors commit themselves: (1) to investigate any instance of plagiarism or text recycling by means of antiplagiarism programs when a manuscript is submitted; (2) to choose referees who do not have a conflict of interest with the authors; (3) to make the decision about the submission, based on the referees’ evaluation, the focus, and scope of the journal, the originality of the manuscript, and the compliance of the text with the guidelines for authors. This decision is made based on the editors’ reading of the text after receiving the opinions of reviewers.

In relation to the reviewers, the members of the editorial team of the journal and ad hoc reviewers commit themselves to (1) respond to the request for an immediate opinion, accepting or denying it, in order to ensure the promptness of the entire evaluation process; (2) reject the evaluation if they perceive any conflict of interest in relation to the manuscript; and (3) notify the editors if they perceive the similarity between the manuscript and other published texts of which they are aware.

Finally, the authors already in the submission process declare that: (1) the contribution is original and unpublished, and does not involve plagiarism and/or text recycling; (2) in case the manuscript uses images (books, internet, etc.), the authorization for the use of images was sent to the editors of Cad_Lin Journal; (3) in the case of texts with more than one author, declare the role of each author in the production of an article, according to the CRediT taxonomy; (4) in case the work has had financial support, disclose the source(s); and (5) review the text based on the relevance of the comments made by reviewers; if it considers that any comment is not relevant, explain to the editors about its decision.

The Review Process

Cad_Lin's review process is open and transparent. In this process, manuscripts are made immediately available as a pre-print in advance of any formal peer review procedures, so the wider community is able to contribute to the review process. In the formal peer review process, authors and reviewers are aware of each other’s identity. Direct, reciprocal discussion between author(s) and reviewers and/or between reviewers is allowed and encouraged. If the manuscript is accepted, all signed reviewes are published as part of the paper, along with the author's responses. When the manuscript is published, review and commenting are allowed and encouraged, either directly in the published text, using the integrated Hypothesis tool, or in independent platforms such as PubPeer. We believe that this approach corroborates the scrutiny and curation of a peer-reviewed publication and helps to re-establish bonds of trust with the community. Besides, it allows reviewers to be recognized and rewarded for the important work they do. By publishing their review reports and assigning them a DOI makes them citable research outputs in their own right. Please read Cad_Lin's Review Process for more information.

Editorial Process Time

The time between the submission of a manuscript and the first response from a reviewer 3 weeks. The time between the submission and the publication of manuscripts varies widely and is related to several factors, including the number of rounds required for an editorial decision to be made. On average, articles are published in eight weeks.

Open Access Policy

Cad_Lin is a Platinum Open Access journal financed by the Brazilian Linguistics Association. It does not charge authors for publication and offers immediate free access to its content, according to the principle that making scientific knowledge freely available to the general public promotes the worldwide democratization of knowledge. Users are allowed to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without asking prior permission from the publisher or the author. This is in accordance with the BOAI definition of open access.

Retraction Policy

Cad_Lin supports and follows the principles and standards recommended by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE - Publication Ethics Committee) - an international organization of reference in integrity and ethics in scientific publications. It declares that the editorial process, selection, and publication criteria follow the rules of conduct and ethics, in accordance with the COPE Code.

The editorial practice in the case of scientific misconduct (plagiarism, falsification or fabrication of data, misuse of references or citations, duplicity, authorship dispute, among others) follows the procedures, checklist, and guidelines of the Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors of the Committee on Publication Ethics - COPE. Cad_Lin uses plagiarism tracking tools, and authors should be aware of the implications provided for in the legal provisions of the Brazilian Penal Code (Article 184) and the Copyright Law (Article 7, third paragraph of Law No. 9,610 , of February 19, 1998 – see Law No. 12,853, of 2013).

In the event of misconduct on the part of authors, editors, and reviewers, the article will be removed from the review process, and this journal may, at the decision of the editorial board, refuse to receive future submissions from the author(s). When the misconduct is committed by one or more of the editors, they will be removed from their duties in the journal. And if the misconduct is practiced by an ad hoc referee, he/she will not make new contributions to the journal, and his/her role as an evaluator will be deactivated.

Cad_Lin assumes responsibility for publishing corrections, clarifications, retractions, errata, expressions of concern, partial retractions, removal, withdrawal of the published article, among other clarifications that may be necessary. Therefore, if misconduct is identified after the publication of an article, it may need to be updated with additional data, with corrections, with errata, with retractions, or with its complete withdrawal.

If misconduct is detected, depending on the type and severity of the case, perpetrators may suffer one or more of the following penalties:

    1. Be formally clarified about any misunderstandings that have resulted in misconduct.
    2. Be mentioned in a formal notice or magazine editorial detailing the misconduct.
    3. Have the case formally reported to the perpetrator's misconduct supervisor or funding agency.
    4. Be prevented from submitting new manuscripts to the journal.
    5. Have the case formally reported to a professional organization or higher authority for further investigation and action.

For cases and situations not foreseen and announced on this site, Cad_Lin assumes the guidelines and recommendations of COPE. All measures will be taken based on the guidelines of this International Ethics Committee.
